Methodology
This visualization shows the aggregate amounts of trade between the world's countries and Africa in the year 2012. The import flows are based on the data reported by the destination countries. For the export flows the data reported by the flows' origin countries are represented. Imports are reported by countries as CIF, and hence, have an added amount for freight, insurance etc, while exports are reported as FOB. Therefore, the amounts for import and export should not be directly compared. The commodities are grouped hierarchically according to the SITC classification.
